I am receiving 'Error 734: The PPP link control protocol was terminated' when trying to connect to the Internet.

Receiving Error 734 when trying to connect?
Windows 2000 issues 'Error 734: The PPP link control protocol was terminated' when you try to establish a dial-up connection?

When you try to dial-up with a PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) connection, you receive:
Error 734: The PPP link control protocol was terminated.
This error is the result of having Multi-link negotiation turned on for a single-link connection, or having the dial-up connection security configuration improperly configured to the Require secured password option.


To fix the problem:
01. Start / Settings / Network and Dial-up Connections.
02. Right-click the failing dial-up connection and press Properties.
03. Select the Networking tab.
04. Press the Settings button.
05. If the Negotiate multi-link for single link connections box is checked, clear it.
06. Press OK and OK.
07. Start / Settings / Network and Dial-up Connections.
08. Double-click the failing connection. If you connect properly, exit this procedure.
09. Start / Settings / Network and Dial-up Connections.
10. Right-click the failing dial-up connection and press Properties.
11. Select the Security tab.
12. Toggle the drop-down box to Allow unsecured password and press OK.
13. Start / Settings / Network and Dial-up Connections.
14. Double-click the failing connection and try to establish a dial-up connection.
